Petition Signed to Stop Rail Yard
Railroaded has been collecting signatures on a petition opposing construction and operation of the rail yard built by Cando Contracting Ltd. on Canadian National Railway land just outside Edmonton. Every homeowner contacted who can see and/or hear the rail yard has now signed the petition. The entire community agrees that Cando, CN and Imperial Oil could not have selected a worse location for a rail yard. It is clear the proponents did not do their homework before sneaking into this community to build the rail yard.
What is particularly frustrating to local farm and acreage owners is that Strathcona County staff, who had no authority to approve this project which falls under federal jurisdiction, met secretly with the proponents, provided noise permits, road use agreements, and other construction approvals. County staff ignored their own rail yard setback of a minimum of 300m from homes. (This setback is one endorsed by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities of which Strathcona County is a member.) Residents are trying to get to the bottom of why the County was so quick to assist and facilitate this project.
